Proposed convention centre in city remains on paper

Even as Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had announced in 2010 to set up a permanent convention centre in the city to facilitate trade fairs, no visible progress has been made in this regard.
Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, patron, Amritsar Vikas Manch (AVM), in an email to the Deputy Chief Minister has reminded him of his promise made on the concluding day of the fifth edition of the Punjab international Trade EXPO (PITEX) on December 14, 2010.
Gumtala quoted Sukhbir Badal as saying, “Looking at the increase in the trade and commerce in the region, the government, in collaboration with the PHD Chamber, will set up a permanent convention centre like Pragati Maidan in Amritsar so that every year temporary arrangements do not have to be made for the trade expo”.
